Introduction: Right now America has a big problem with pet overpopulation. According to the Humane Society of America, Four million cats and dogs—about one every eight seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets. Spay/neuter is a proven way to reduce pet overpopulation, ensuring that every pet has a family to love them.(1) Whether you’ve recently adopted a pet or you’re considering it, one of the most important health decisions you’ll make is to spay or neuter your cat or dog.   As an owner of 2 dogs-one male and one female I can attest to the positive effects that spaying and neutering can bring to your pets.   Right now I am going to inform you on the benefits of spaying and neutering.

    I. Spaying is the surgical removal of a female animal's uterus and ovaries. Spaying is a routine veterinary procedure performed while the pet is asleep. Depending on the circumstances, the procedure may require a night of hospitalization. Most veterinarians recommend spaying around 6 months of age.

          A.   One of the most important benefits of spaying is that your female pet will live a longer, healthier life.

                1. According to the American Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats
                2. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases.(2)

          B. Another benefit is that your spayed female will not go into heat.
