Study Abroad means when a student leaves his native country and goes to another country for the purpose of pursuing better education. Although by definition it sounds very difficult but studying abroad transforms a student into a responsible, tolerant, and makes him a better person for the future. This essay will discuss the benefits of studying abroad and how it helps people from different countries and cultures to understand each other. People from different cultures mix up in activities, students while living with other nationalities also develop respect and tolerance for each other. A student can also benefit from interacting in a foreign language. Studying abroad also gives a student greater independence especially, students from third world countries as for them this is the first time when they leave their home to live and study alone. The benefits of study abroad are not only in the classroom but also outside, all the points mentioned above are the benefits that a student gains while studying abroad. This is clearly mentioned in the quote "In the classroom, of course, the instructor to a large extent calls the tune. But outside the classroom, during study abroad in particular, it is the learners view that matters, for they shape the learning opportunities that arise and the learning strategies that will be employed" (Miller and Ginsberg 1995, 243). Miller and Ginsberg clearly emphasise the importance of learning of foreign students outside the classroom. They clearly tell us that the learning that is done outside the classroom is much more than in the classroom itself. However there still are limitations of studying abroad for an average international student. As they will at start suffer from the culture shock as every country is different culture wise and lifestyle wise. An international student may initially find it difficult to cope up with the difference of culture. The difference of culture also leads to racist comments being passed to others particularly asians and dark coloured people. These are just a handful of disadvantages compared to numerous advantages of studying abroad. The essay hence will focus on the advantages of studying abroad with the arguments mentioned above in more detail. The most notable advantage of studying abroad is interaction in a foreign language, most likely English. English in the modern times is a global language it is spoken in almost every country of the world. A student will learn the language in the classroom but the learning that will take place outside the classroom would be the real learning. Students will learn much more when they interact with fellow students in the language, they will also learn how to react and talk in different situations. The student would also learn the casual English that is spoken among friends and family rather than learning formal English only. This is mentioned in " Although valuable, the classroom is not what attracts most learners to study abroad. Rather, it's the potential for extensive social interaction in the target language. Many researchers have focused considerable attention on learners perception of their social environment and the importance of communicative interaction for their L2". This clearly means that a student learns much more outside the classroom than he can ever learn in the classroom as he will be interacting in the language all the time. Classroom learning is possible in our home country but the decision of studying is heavily influenced by learning outside the classroom. When a student will get fluent in the language he will be able to express himself much more, he will also give output to the native people, hence there is an exchange of culture between the students. It will be very beneficial to the community in the future as when these people will understand each other respect and tolerance will develop. Both the native student and the foreign student can then educate people of their respective countries to...
