    Artificial Sweeteners

There are several different types of sugar substitutes commonly used. Artificial sweeteners are typically synthetic meaning they are made in a laboratory and non-nutritive, which means they don’t contain calories and don’t supply your body with energy, vitamins, or anything beneficial to your body. A teaspoon of sugar contains about 16 calories, so people trying to maintain or lose weight often turn to artificial sweeteners to satisfy their sweet tooth. Sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol, maltitol and xylitol, and natural sweeteners, such as honey, on the other hand, usually do contain calories. The most popular types of sugar substitutes in the US and many other countries are artificial sweeteners. These synthetic substitutes are many times sweeter than sugar, so less is needed to obtain the same level of sweetness as something containing sugar. They can also intensify and prolong flavors, which is why you may find that the flavor of artificially sweetened chewing gum lasts longer than sugar sweetened gum. Sweeteners can be used in the home for baking, and they can also be found in many processed products including soft drinks, candy, and canned foods. They are becoming more popular as tabletop sweeteners at home and are available at nearly all restaurants and food chains to put in coffee and tea (Han). Commonly used natural sweeteners include honey, molasses, maple syrup and agave nectar. Most of these natural sweeteners contain either fructose meaning the kind of sugar found in fruit or glucose which is found in a variety of foods such as grains, fruits and vegetables, which are two types of simple sugars. Often, natural sweeteners are advertised as a healthier alternative to table sugar because they are not processed. However, most of these have just as many calories…

Honey synthesis begins with bees collecting nectar and pollen from flowers but only nectar is used to make honey. Nectar is mostly water with dissolved sugars and the amount of sugars varies greatly and is usually 25-70%. Nectar is sucked by honeybees by inserting its proboscis into the flowers nectary and passes it through the esophagus and then to the honey crop, which is used as temporary storage and transportation. Nectar passes through physical and chemical process to ripen as honey. Some of the physical properties of the honey can be moisture and aw, pH and acidity, color, electrical conductivity, specific rotation,…

Richard Alexander is the author of “Sweeteners: nutritive.” Throughout his book he examines and compares prevalent sweeteners used in many food products. Alexander includes a table explaining the relationship between five widely used sweeteners; sugar, honey, HFCS 55, HFCS 42, and saccharin. Using sugar as the basis for comparison for sweetness, Alexander evaluated the level of sweetness for each of the four other sweeteners. He examined HFCS 55 and 42 for his study. The “55” and “42” represents the percent of fructose within the syrup’s formula. Concluding his experiment, Alexander found that HFCS 55 is equivalent to the sweetness of sugar as well as honey. On the other hand, HFCS 42 is only 92 percent as sweet as sugar. He also found that saccharin was 300 to 500 percent sweeter than sugar (Alexander,…

The core issue Unifine Richardson (UR) faces is their sole honey supplier, Harrington Honey (HH), will run out of Chinese honey in a little over a month because the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently found traces of chloramphenicol (a banned antibiotic associated with causing a sometimes-fatal blood disorder) and rejected the contaminated honey. Until China finds a way to detect contaminated honey, Unifine Richardson cannot sell any of its current Chinese-Canadian blend. Because of the CFIA’s findings, the global supply of honey will decrease by 20%, thus causing an increase in price. Harrington Honey will not be able to maintain the honey stream.…

Honey bees has been considered a beneficial introduction; it distributes as a pollinator and the provider of the hive products. Some scientist has questioned the environment role of bees outside of their natural state or range. Majority of plant species are used by honey bees, which set some high potential disturbance for pollinator relationships. Honey bees do not necessarily harm plants: they are also unlikely to enlarge hybridization of native flora. Honey bees usually use a small proportion of plant species. Honey bees are more likely effective pollinators of native plants than other bees. Many plant species are used by honey bees, which means that there is a high potential for disturbance of pollinator/native relationships. Negative…

Four authors: Oduwole, Meremikwu, Oyo-Ita & Udoh (2014), reviewed three small randomized control trial studies involving 568 children with diagnostic of acute cough aged one to eighteen years in an ambulatory setting. Participants were randomly chosen and sectioned into groups for the study. The purpose of this study was “to evaluate the effectiveness of honey for acute cough in children in ambulatory settings” (Page1). The authors excluded studies that involved participants with a chronic cough and also excluded studies with a sample size of less than 10 children for each intervention. One small study compared honey against placebo Cohen (2012) and the other two small studies compared honey versus dextromethorphan,…
