Bend it like Beckham

In the film Bend it Like Beckham directed by Gurinder Chada displays an internal conflict of decision making through Jess’ internal struggle with soccer and family. Jess’ sister continues to be successful and gets engaged, Jess tries to ignore these desires and wishes to play soccer. Jess is torn between the choice of either playing soccer and disrespecting her family’s wishes or respecting her family’s wishes and not playing soccer. The reason why this is even a problem is the fact that her family does not want her to be playing soccer and they want her to be a more of a mature cultural woman, whereas Jess wants to steer away from this and have a career in soccer. An example of the conflict within Bend it Like Beckham arises when Jess’ sister wedding falls on the same day as Jess’ soccer team finals does. This example supports the claim because it shows how Jess has to choose between family or soccer and that there’s is no way she can choose both which results in her being torn internally.
To best solve the problem Jess chooses to stick with her family. When the finals do happen to be on the same day as Jess’ sister’s wedding, Jess made the decision to stay with her family and risk not make not making it to the game. This shows how she finally gives in to the conflict just to get it over with. The decision gives the feeling of resolution while also making the audience disagree with her choice to potentially be giving up her dreams.
In the film Bend it Like Beckham directed by Gurinder Chada displays an internal conflict of decision making through Jess’ internal struggle with soccer and family. The author does an excellent job of making the viewers feel apart of the conflict by making it a very emotionally driven one by making the main character, Jess, feel hopeless when it came to what she wanted to do. I think it is a great use of the conflict through out the movie.
