Where do you belong? It may sound simple but it is not an easy question to answer. The common thing that we all have across the world is the need to belong and we always look for it. In order to belong we must be accepted or understood by others. This can be achieved by forming relationships. Forming relationships inspires individual’s thoughts and behaviours, which help us discover our true identity and where we truly belong. These aspects of belonging are conveyed in the novel “Swallow the air” by Tara June Winch, the poem “The folk museum” composed by Peter Skrzynecki and “Redfern Now – Family” directed by Rachel Perkins and Catriona McKenzie. Close relationships require understanding of each other. May and Billy from Swallow the air has a strong connection. The imagery “we crash into the surf, we swim, we dive, and we tumble”, reminds us the joyful memories they had and the use of first person plural “we” illustrates the close relationship May and Billy has. Similarly in Redfern now, Tyler and Maddie has a close sibling relationship where Tyler really cares about his little sister Maddie. This idea is evident when Tyler asks Grace “what about Maddie? She’s scared of the dark”. Knowing and worrying about his sister shows the tight relationship they have. In few scenes we can see them hugging, holding hands and smiling at each other. These positive body languages express the love and togetherness of the siblings. Some may not experience the connection with people or to the world because of who they are and where they came from. Tyler and Maddie face rejections from their relatives because of their mother. Getting a door slammed to their face and being refused to make eye contacts describe the sense of rejection and neglection. Moreover the malicious gaze from Grace’s children towards Tyler shows the hatred and revulsion, while Tyler faces down feeling the sense of exclusion. The panning scene of Grace and her husband to Tyler has a thick wall between them...
