The resident is a 58 years-old female, who was born in the country of the Philippines. She came to the United States in 1971 on a student visa. Her intention when she came here was to go to school to become a nurse. She initially enrolled in a community college. However, shortly after she met and fell in love with her future husband she drops out of school. She is from a family of six siblings, but she was the only one in her family to migrate to the United States to further her education. Her place of residence has always been the Bronx.
When she arrived in the United States, she was still a teenager and was sent to live with a family friend in the Bronx. Because she was not contributing financially to the household, there was an agreement for her to do other things like taking care of the three children in the household, along with doing the household chores. Even though, her duties at the house were hard she stayed with the family until she meets her husband in late 1974.
She and her husband were married in early 1978. They did not have any children; however, her husband came from a very large extended family and so there are always people around. A couple of years after they were married. She becomes very sick. For the better part of the next two years, she would spend her time visiting numerous doctors who were unable to make an accurate diagnosis as to why she was so sick. By the third year when a diagnosis was made it was already too late, because whatever the illness was it completely destroyed her liver. She now has to do dialysis three times a week to stay alive. She said she will never forget the first day of her dialysis treatment. She was scared and afraid. So that night before the treatment she stayed up all night and cried [continues]
