My Response to the Article
“Becoming a Virtual Company”, (http://www.inc.com/magazine/19951215/2647.html)
was both an interesting and educational article. The author notes seemingly simple tasks
and procedures in order to improve success utilizing internet technology. For example,
automating tasks that waste time is vital to any organization. I work in the health care
field, as a Medical Lab Tech. There are countless areas in the lab where internet
technology has streamlined the process of patient care. For example, we inter laboratory
requisitions into the computer that stores it until the testing is complete. Then test results
are uploaded onto the system, making it available for all care providers to use. This
reduces the necessity for information to be transferred in a traditional manner; paper, logs
and verbal, which causes potential error and miss interpretation of data.
Although the article was published in 1995, there are sound principles that are covered
like; using email, utilizing companywide electronic filing cabinets and motivating staff to
utilize these tools, which can be applied in today’s corporate setting. Email allows staff to
communicate to one another without the necessity for meetings or waiting for a phone
messages to be heard, deciphered and returned. Companywide electronic filing cabinets
are the company “intranet” sites of today. These are exclusive web sites, accessible by
company members only, that allow access to all types of organizational information
including; human resource files, employment opportunities, company news and other
documents pertaining to company business. By encouraging staff to utilize this
technology, companies catapult their internal strengths by leaps and bounds. [continues]
