Becmoing a Helper

There are nine different needs that are deemed necessary to becoming effective in your profession as a Child and Youth Care Worker. These needs will influence your work with children and youth and allow you to “recognize their needs, to accept them, and become aware of how these needs influence the quality of your interactions with others” (Corey & Corey, 2007). The majority of these needs are met through interaction and communication with your clients on a professional and compassionate level. In order to build a professional rapport with clients there are various tools one must utilize and exhibit that will fundamentally assist you in becoming an affective and professional helper to alter the lives of others. The need to make an impact. The goal of Child and Youth work is to support, help intervene and resolve problematic or unsafe situations for a children and youth. It is very “psychologically rewarding and gratifying to realize clients are getting better due to your influence.” (Corey and Corey, 2007). If the situation is not resolved or their efforts hasn’t influenced the child, the worker may apply this to themselves, self-blame, and carry the burden that the failure of the case is their fault. Making an impact is truly a central purpose to why I chose the career path of helping others. Currently I work in retail, which requires one to work with others, when my efforts of exhibiting good customer service do not please the customer, I relate it back to myself, and begin to experience the feeling of self-blame. If I begin to take an in depth look into problem within myself before I begin my career, I will further my professionalism and be a more efficient Child and Youth Worker. The need to return a favour. Many Child and Youth workers have encountered difficulties and hurdles, where they have had to seek help or a mentor, or have even been in the government care system. Whilst seeking help they would have encountered a mentor or a role model that made a significant impact on their lives, which influenced them to shadow a similar career path, or choose an occupation that will benefit others similar to they’ve been helped by their mentor. The need to return a favour is extremely relevant to me. Throughout my life I’ve encountered one impactful individual who worked in Kinark Child and Family Services. This impacted my program and career choice greatly. This decision came so effortlessly to me because I wanted to reach out to others and influence the lives of individuals the way she supported and reached out to me. She was able to determine and identify that I was in serious need. I felt nothing but compassion from her, and I am hoping I will have a similar impression to my impending clientele. The need to care for others. Many people in fact may feel as if they are a natural born helper, and may have felt the need to help others for their entire life. Whether you’re the one resolving the family issues and concerns or you’re the rock that holds everyone together, there are always individuals who find ways to meet the needs of others and to implement a solution to their assist in their needs. Often times having to tend to others needs, may outweigh your own needs which in fact may lead to you neglecting your personal needs, this may leave you “professionally burned out, or emotionally exhausted, if you don’t learn to ask for help when you need it” (Corey & Corey, (2007). Ever since a young age, my family has not been whole, and I’ve felt the need to take on everyone’s grief and disappointment of the difficult situation. Due to me carrying the weight of others, and only listening to their problems, I found myself feeling lost as I never had to listen and care for me. Seeing as I took the weight of everyone else’s difficulties on my shoulders I found myself actually feeling as my own feelings were pushed aside. The need for self-help.
