Schizophrenia is a disease of the brain. It affects the individuals’ behaviors, attitudes, perception and the thinking process. It is defined as “an extremely complex mental illness which changes in key brain functions, such as perception, emotions, and behavior”. People who suffer from this disease suffer from positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms include distortion of normal functions, delusion, and hallucinations. While negative symptoms the individual suffers from apathy, lack of emotion, poor or non-existent social functioning. There are many forms of Schizophrenia. In the movie “Beautiful Mind” John Nash is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia which is common form of schizophrenia. Throughout his life he suffers from paranoid delusions, which has affected is well own well being and emotionally affecting his loved ones. Throughout the movie he suffers from hallucinations, for example seeing people that are not real and believing that he works as a spy for the department of defense of the United States. This has affected himself and loved ones. Objective Data:

In the movie, John Nash is diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia. This mental disorder can be detected and diagnosed through certain signs and symptoms manifested by Dr. Nash. These signs and symptoms are sometimes very hard to see and confirm. At the start of the movie, he may seem like a normal person just by looking at him. It is very hard to tell that he had a mental disorder. As the movie progresses, he begins to show positive and negative signs and symptoms of schizophrenia. Physical manifestations include his unsteady gait and his hands are very shaky and fidgety. He also shows signs of grandiosity because he believed that he could beat his classmates even though he wasn’t attending class. He believed that he was the best among all of them.
