After the war of 1812, there was an Era of Good Feeling. The Era of Good Feeling occurred when James Monroe was President. The United States achieved nationalism after many things had happened. For example, the Louisiana Purchase which led to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Which also as well as leading to the Westward Expansion of the US. These were important events because it led for Lewis and Clark to also Encouraged Euro- to do fur trade in the West. Nationalism held the country together while sectionalism focused on dividing the citizens based on major issues. Like good times the Unites States had, there were also bad times people went through as a country.
In 1816 in Congress, congressman from Virginia John Randolph gave a speech on taxation. “[no] one interest in the country [should be] sacrificed by the management of taxation to another…” (Document A) This quote shows sectionalism because he is stating that at least the people who are in the countries side should not be taxed. He also stated that the congress should equalize duties on the whole United States.
Just a year after, in February 4, 1817, John Clahoun also had made a speech on disunion. “We are under the most imperious obligations to counteract every tendency to disunion.” (Document B) This quote shows Sectionalism. The United States were supportive about each other and then division began. John states how disunion which is union separating, beginning rapidly because the center of the republic weakens the union.
John Krimmel made a painting of the 4th of July in 1819. “Fourth of July Celebration” (Document C) This painting shows both sectionalism and nationalism because the nation came together to celebrate the Independence of the United States. But at the same time, you could have tell how they hated each other. How people still were diverse.
