Basketball Essay

Self-Presentation

General purpose: how basketball taught me hard work and discipline

Specific purpose: hard work can help achieve anything

Thesis statement through basketball I learned how to work hard and discipline myself to achieve my goals in life

My passion for the basketball started when I was in my second year of high

school, basketball not only helped me grow but also taught me a lot of things that I use in my

everyday life.

My passion for the game began during my last year of middle school, but

despite trying out for the middle school team I was not chosen to be a part of it. Although this

was of great disappointment to me, it did not deter me from my love of the game. It made me

more driven and determined to work hard during the summer prior to entering high school to

ensure that I was in a position to try-out for the high school freshman team. I practiced morning,

noon and night in 90 degree heat, perfecting my shot and working out to improve my skills. This

hard work paid off, when I was chosen to be a part of the freshman team and I have continued to

work hard during my high school years to be an asset to the varsity team.

I feel sure that this experience of being a part of the high school basketball team has

helped me become successful in my academic life. Being part of a team has instilled in me the

responsibilities and work ethic that carries over into other aspects of my life and I feel sure that

this will be extremely valuable in my future endeavors at the University. And really more

precisely on hard work, there is a saying that “hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work

hard.” I believe this because to me it means that no matter how good you are if you don’t

Ever since I was young I’ve always loved basketball. It started when I was young and I used to always watch my older brothers play in the driveway. I always wished I could play with them but they always said I was too young. Nevertheless, I was still persistent and practiced my game everyday. All the time I was looking up to my favorite player Lebron James.…

When the season began, we did not have a coach to lead us, so we practiced apace with the Varsity squad. A few weeks into the season, the Varsity coach found us a mentor that would lead us. As a few more weeks went by, our coach started picking up on more activities, which was too much for her to handle so she left, and we were once again without a coach. The team began to fall apart and it became very stressful for all of us. After the first three months of cheering, we had lost 8 girls on the team. Throughout those three months, my…

As a team, everyone worked their hardest to perform to the best of their abilities. Although we had our serious times, the team became the family I had desired. Unlike my birth family, this new family was considerate enough to listen to my problems and thoughts, and give me advice on what I should do with my life. Not only did I create strong bonds with my team members, but I felt my self esteem escalating. I was able to grow as a strong human being and think and speak for myself for the first time in my life. After years of being shunned by my family and bullied by my classmates, I was able to be myself and embrace who I truly am.…

There is not a single feeling greater than the one you experience when you make a positive impact on someone else’s life. Thankfully, I was able to experience that in my junior year. My high school has a program called Link Crew that is designed to help alleviate the anxiety of freshmen’s transition in to high school. When I signed up to get involved, I never realized how strongly it would affect not only my life, but also the life of everyone else who came in contact with it one way or another. Junior year was my first year involved in the program. At first, I was not sure if I would be able to handle it because it was a club that required a large time commitment. I was already involved in my advisory board, student council, and also I had been on the varsity softball team for both years prior to my junior year, along with working anywhere from three to five days a week. It was a very busy time in my life for a while, but I soon came to realize that Link Crew was completely worth it once I started seeing the effect it had on my school.…

I moved back to Canada at Grade 10 and joined the Richmond Chuckers Gold AA team. Although we were not the best team, we had a solid, all round roster. I was playing right field and batting bottom of the order. I contributed to the title our team won by my great defence and my occasional hit. The trophy was important for me because it is the only championship I won. Although I am not anywhere close to being a MLB player, my love for baseball eventually lead to the economics of baseball. That is one of the reason why I am applying to Beedie School of…
