Bartleby: A Complex Individual
When was the last time you had the opportunity to truly test your patience? The lawyer in Bartleby, the Scrivener was able to test and even stretch the limits of his patience with a complex individual named Bartleby. While reading this story, I also found that I was testing my own patience and avoiding frustration while trying to make sense of the words in front of me. My understanding of the characteristics of Bartleby may be commonly perceived to some aspect, but I found it hard to think too far out of the box. Bartleby, the Scrivener has indeed been a story known for it’s complexity and it’s various interpretations. The text alone was full of words that may have held a different meaning during the time of its erection than it holds now in modern times. Also, the word arrangement made it difficult to read with a steady flow as a book today would be read with modern literacy comprehension. The mystery of Bartleby’s past, present, and future was arduous to solve; this made it difficult for me to find clues to compose an imaginary image of Bartleby’s character. However, after summing up my notes of this slightly confusing story, I have attempted to come up with a few theories on what Bartleby may have been like. I have determined that Bartleby may be illiterate, anorexic, depressed, and terminally ill, or even mentally unstable or handicapped. The narrator in this story, the lawyer, did his best to describe Bartleby through the experiences he had while their paths crossed in life. It was due to Bartleby’s employment that the lawyer was able to receive the little biography he did. According to the lawyer, Bartleby was well qualified for employment as a scrivener, or a copyist. The lawyer seemed to let the information gathered from a brief interview win his decision to hire Bartleby. Beside Bartleby’s skill, he also liked the quietness and steadiness of the man before him.
