Barriers to Effective Communication
Communication is a key factor in every aspect of our lives whether it is personally or professionally. Communication is simply the transmitting of information between two or more people. With communication there are different processes that are involved. Hearing and listening is required, there are different channels of communication, and there are barriers or obstacles that we face.
As in every task we attempt or complete, communication has a process in which certain aspects are required to make communication successful. “Communication requires the transmitting of an idea, sending the idea through a medium, receiving the message, understanding the idea, and providing feedback” (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). The first step is transmitting the idea; this would be forming the idea and trying to figure out how you would like to convey your message. The second step is sending your idea through a medium. A medium is going to be a conversation, e-mail, or letter. Now it could even be texting for our generation. The third step is going to include how you want your message sent. Receiving the message is going include who or whom you have chosen to send the information to in order to convey information. Next, understanding the information is highly important; if you send information to a fellow colleague and they do not understand your messages then you have wasted your time. Feedback is the last step in the communication process, and at this point you may get questions asking for clarification on what you have just sent or you may receive opinions and ideas if that is what was requested. The communication process will not come full circle unless each of these components is involved; this is what makes communication effective.
