Graffiti Hero: Banksy's Artwork
Banksy is a well known street artist who merges dark humor with grafftti achieved through his very individual stencil technique. His works of political and social comments have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.
Banksy's work first started 'Bristol underground scene' which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. One artist quoted about Banksy saying "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier technician, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s." Observers have noted that his style is similar to Blek le Rat who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris and Jef Aerosol who sprayed his first street stencil in 1982 in Tours France, and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass, which kept up a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
His work Los Angeles and Mona Lisa were a reaction against Modernity, it created a new feeling and gave a belief in social Pluralism and the individual view or construction of reality.
Peter Callesen is a Danish artist who creates amazing intricate papercut artwork from A4 paper and in large-scale installations. Each work is created from one sheet of paper, which could be three-dimensional flowers falling from a bouquet or a hummingbird flying from the page. He uses A4 because he says it is "probably the most common and consumed media used for carrying information today," but we "rarely notice the actual materiality" of it. The frail and delicate paper medium underlines that element of calamity.
