The discovery of oneself does not suddenly appear over night. For some people one major experience that occurs early in life could help a person find themselves, while others search for years and years, maybe even there whole entire life to finally discover who they really are. In the novel The Joy Luck Club written by Amy Tan, the eight main characters who come from Chinese decent, are on a quest to find balance in their relationships and in their new Chinese ' American culture in order to find the one person they have been searching for there whole entire life, themselves.
After leaving past tragedies in China and moving to America, all four mothers had trouble teaching their daughters to have a balance of their new Chinese ' American culture. Each mother tried to teach there American born daughters how to keep and learn to not be ashamed of their Chinese heritage, but at the same time fit in with the American culture. Lindo Jong, the mother of Waverly Jong said “I wanted my children to have the best combination: American circumstances and Chinese character.” (Tan 254) This quote shows the good intensions she had for her daughter in America. Lindo had no problem in teaching her daughter how American circumstances work but had trouble teaching her about Chinese character. This is because Waverly was already Americanized, and trying to mix these two totally different cultures together was very hard, causing and imbalance in their lives.
Just like Lindo Jong, An-mei Hsu was having a hard time getting her daughter Rose Hsu Jordan to accept her Chinese culture. When Rose was younger her family took a trip to the beach. The only reason she wanted to go was because it was a good way to act and feel like a typical white American family. It is really disappointing for An-mei to know how her daughter feels about her Chinese culture. Instead of having a fun day at the beach with her family, Rose is shameful of her Chinese culture and is trying to hide it just so...
