In the teacher's Back-to-School Night speech, three instances, I feel, that demonstrate sensitivity to the parents are the teacher providing a written disclosure document on what to expect in his/her classroom, providing instructions on how to access the school's Web site, and by having translators available during the speech.      The teacher handed out a very resourceful tool to parents by providing the written disclosure document.  The document should help parents understand how the teacher will conduct his/her class and outline what the state expects the students to learn.  By providing instructions on how to access the school's Web site, this is very good for those parents who have little or no computer/internet experience.  Having translators available during this speech is very thoughtful and considerate in that this group includes families who are English language learners and ma not quite understand everything the teacher is saying.  "Professionals need to be mindful of their spoken vocabulary, as well as what they write, when working with parents who have lower levels of literacy" (Mendoza, 2003).  As a teacher, you must be able to reach ALL of your students and their families to keep them involved.      A quote from the speech that demonstrates insensitivity to the parents is "Email is one of the best ways for us to communicate!"  I feel this is insensitive in that, yes, this may be one of the best ways for the teacher to communicate, but what if the parent(s) trying to communicate are of low-income stature and cannot afford a computer or has no way to gain access to a public computer?  By the use of the exclamation mark at the end of the statement, it's almost as if this is the only way the teacher prefers to communicate.  The definitions for disclosure document and Web site are also insensitive.  I realize there may be parents in the audience who have little or no education or do not fully understand the English language, but if I were listening to...
