Aviation Weather Reports

In aviation weather is an extremely crucial element, perhaps the most crucial. Weather from day-to-day or minute-to-minute can change very rapidly, which can dictate and control flight operations. Weather reports in aviation are a collaborative effort between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Weather Service (NWS), Department of Defense (DOD), and various other aviation groups and professionals. This paper will examine the different types of weather reports, the information available in each of these reports, and breakdown and extract the information from a randomly generated weather report - a METAR. While information used in weather reports is predominantly submitted by the government and other federal agencies, it is not uncommon for pilots, air traffic controllers, or airmen to report their observations. Weather information submitted by aviation professionals is used in specific types of weather reports and broadcasted in different formats. The type of weather report issued is determined by the person or agency submitting the information.
One type of report is a Pilot Report or PIREP for short. A PIREP is a report of actual weather conditions encountered by an aircraft in flight. This information is relayed via radio by the pilot of an aircraft to the nearest station and then transmitted to local weather offices and air traffic service units. The actual form used to record a PIREP may differ in one country, but the standards and criteria remain the same. At a minimum the PIREP must contain a header, aircraft location, time, flight level, aircraft type, and one other field, i.e.: sky cover, ambient temperature, wind velocity, turbulence, icing, remarks, or flight visibility. In recent years a PIREP will also include UA or UUA, which is the code used to identify the

Science, technology, engineering, & mathematics – alternatively STEM – is an evergrowing field in today’s society. Technology is increasing in popularity, and development of assistive tools in society are becoming more and more urgent for traditional use. Because of this, spending is required in the STEM field, but many feel that it is not needed. At first glance, one would think that the sectors of the government that keep us safe are the ones with the most funding, which is mainly true if you look at budgeting for the military. However, sectors within the Department of Commerce, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, are lacking in budget due to focused spending elsewhere, which creates research and development – herein R&D – problems that may create outages and cost the lives of many Americans. This is…

Dopplers, radar, and satellites are great tools for gathering observational data. However, with this technology, there are limitations and challenges that meteorologist face that affect forecasts. One of the biggest challenges is comprehending all the compiled data that it sent it. The biggest limitation with forecasting tornadoes is a concept called spatial uncertainty which is the lack of knowledge or data on an object’s geographic location. In this case, Tornadoes pose an incredible difficulty with issuing warnings. Based on data collected over the years shown in Figure 2, there was a consensus that “Tornado season” occurs during the springtime and more tornadoes occur more frequently in the Great Plains, as known as “Tornado Alley”. The warning system in the U.S. is efficient in alerting people of an impending tornado with the use of radios, television, sirens, etc. However, there was a ban placed in 1887 on broadcasting tornadoes based on a census among scientist that tornado forecasts were more harmful than beneficial (Colman, 567). When the band was officially lifted they were usually only issued in a matter of seconds during the ‘50s and ‘60s. Now we can issue a warning at least 15 minutes prior due to today’s technology. The main goal for the future of forecasting is closing the gap between warnings and watches so issuing warnings are more accurate and maybe…
