Assignment 1 – Five Forces Analysis of an Aviation Company Based in Asia

The assignment focuses on the practical application of one of the strategic frameworks covered in the module.   Students are required to write a short essay of around 1,500 – 2000 words using the framework below to investigate an aviation company based in Asia.

|Use Porter’s Five Forces Framework to identify the attractiveness of the related industry/sector (e.g., that of airline   |
|companies, ground handling companies, etc.) in terms of competitive forces.                                               |

|In recent years, which of the five forces has become more positive for the type of companies in question, which less so? |
|In the near future, what might change to make the sector less attractive or more attractive?                             |

You can assume that the reader is already familiar with the relevant framework and you are NOT required to provide a detailed theoretical explanation of the frameworks (or maybe only a short description).   Instead, you are asked to focus in the following areas:

• Search for appropriate industrial and company data.
• Explain how the framework can be used in the company you selected.
• Use the framework to study your selected company based on the collected data.
• Conclusion (including answering the given questions)

Make sure you put down the references or sources of data in your report.   If you wish, you can attach some data as appendix to prove your data search, although it will not be included in the word count stated above.

Marking Criteria

Brief description of the theory and the organization (10%)
Research on the relevant data (sources, references) (25%)
