Nowadays, Australia has a large number of immigrations and it has driven Australia’s population growth. The growth has become more significant in the past decade and the half. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in mid-2010, almost six millions of the Australian resident populations were born outside Australia, which means representing 26.8% of the total Australian resident population. The debate upon the impact of migration growth to a country on the economy and environment has been more controversial. Some support migration claim that Australia’s economy have benefited from rapid migration growth , for example, in meeting demands of labour force, expanding business opportunities and developing the notion of internationalism. However, some deemed that there were series of negative impacts on Australia’s economy and environment as a result of rapid migration growth. Therefore, this essay will explore the discussion on there are too many of immigrants accepted in Australia. It will start with analysing economic constraints which resulted from rapid migration growth, and follow by discussing the environment impact.
There is increasing concern about population ageing in Australia which might hold back the economy growth in the future. In support of preventing Australia’s population ageing, “Big Australia” policy introduced by Mr Kevin Rudd suggested that Australia needs more populations through migrations so as to secure labour supply. From Mr. Kevin Rudd’s point of view, to increase migration and maintain sustainable populations could boost Australia’s economy by the way of solving the problem of ageing population. It revealed that the increased number of populations through migrations could increase participation of workplace. The participation of workforce Due to ageing population, the participation in workforce has been less active; if the population grows, the labour supply could be secured as well as covering the shortage.
