 ATLAS ACTIVITIES FOR AFRICA               NAME______________________ 
I.  MAPPING
1. Use your unlined paper to FREE-HAND a map of Africa, page-size.   Locate and label
the following: 
Atlas Mountains; Sahara Desert; Kalahari Desert; Red Sea; Gulf of Suez; Atlantic and Indian Oceans; Mediterranean Sea; Gulf of Guinea; Lake Chad; Lake Victoria; Great Rift Valley 
Draw and label on your map the equator, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn; the Prime Meridian.  What observation can you make about Africa’s relative location? 
 
 
2. Use the Africa political map provided to show various regions of Africa: 
a. East Africa:  B,D,E,E,K,R,S,T,U,S
b. Equatorial Africa:  C,CAR,C,DRC,EG,G,ST & P
c. Southern Africa:  A,B,L,M,M,N,SA,S,Z,Z
d. West Africa:  B,BF,CV,C,CD”I,G,G,G,G-B,L,N,M,M,SL,S,T
e. North Africa:   A,L,E 
Color each region a different color and make a key. 
On the back of one of your maps, draw a triangle like the one on the board; then locate and label the five regions of Africa relative to the continent. 
Draw in the major rivers of Africa and show the direction of their flow:  indicate both source and mouth.  How have these rivers impacted Africa’s development? 
II. INTERPRETING MAPS 
 
3. Describe your mental image of Africa.  When you think of Africa, what do you see? 
 
 Magnificent beauty.   The beauty of the skyline at sunset and the sunrise at dusk.   I see mental images of jungles.   The hot deserts that have formed over the many decades of evolution.   I also think of the conditions the people live in ad how behind Africa is technologically, and how badly the continent needs money for hospitals, medicine, and education.
 
 
4. Study the landform map on p. 225.  What landforms are most common throughout Africa? The landforms most common are hills and tablelands or plateaus
 
Which region, west or east Africa, has the largest are of mountains? 
 The eastern part of Africa has the most and largest mountains.
