Assisted Suicide: should it be legal?
“Euthanasia is illegal in 50 states due to the homicide laws in the U.S” (Am
erica). Assisted suicide is becoming a much bigger argument issue each and every day. Most people do not believe that someone can legally assist someone to their own death while others believe that it is their life and if they want to die, then they should be able to make the decision to have someone assist them to their death if they wish. Usually assisted suicide pertains to mentally disabled, depressed, and handicapped people. In the United States there have been plenty of court cases and law suits against the people who assist, and this issue just leads to a median between Americans as a whole. Although some Americans do not believe in assisted suicide because it is a form of murder, it is a stronger point and safe to say that it is in fact, legal.
There are many people who agree strongly about the assisted suicide issue. One main reason that some people are for assisted suicide is because they believe that it is a person’s life and you should be able to control how you want your life to be, whether it is to have a long happy life or to end it sooner than God’s plan for you. In The Right To Die Movement Supports Death on Demand article, Wesley Smith shows how Ludwig Minelli agrees with assisted suicide for this reason, “The story about Minelli illuminates a deep ideological belief within the euthanasia movement: that we own our bodies, and thus, determining the time, manner, and method of our own deaths, for whatever reason, is a basic human right” (Smith). Yes, this is in fact a good argument, your life is your life, and you should do with it what you want, but many other people do not believe that is a good enough reason for someone to assist someone to his or her grave.
