Assisted suicide yes or no?
Nina Lakhani - Tony Nicklinson: “Perhaps I’ll say goodbye on Twitter” We live in a society where only life is accepted. that is a problem for the individuals who experience a situation where they have lost the ability to live life and have no other choice than to stand on the sideline watching while the world goes on without them. Tony Nicklinson suffered from a catastrophic stroke that left him with Locked-in Syndrome a disease that prohibits him from moving any other body parts than his eyelids. After 7 years in this condition Tony Nicklinson is going up against the court in an attempt to regain what he thinks is the most basic human right. Tony Nicklinson has told the magazine The Independent that he is only seeking the same rights as any fully functioning person. Tony Nicklinson believes that it is the first right of a human to decide when to live and when to die and because of that he wants the Common law of “necessity” to accommodate for assisted suicide and murder. Tony Nicklinson Describes the problem of faith as a part in this discussion by claiming that the argument that life is sacred because it was granted by god is rubbish. Tony Nicklinson do not want a faith he does not support to control his life. Leading human rights lawyer Saimo Chahal claims that Tony Nicklinson is in breach with Article 8 the right to: “privacy, dignity and autonomy” rights he cannot exercise because of his condition. Joining the debate is one of the doctors from Athen that helped save Tony Nicklinson in 2005 Dr Stelios Doris. He claims that it was a mistake that he survived that day and that he wouldn’t want his worst enemy to be In Tony Nicklinson’s place. Tony Claims that one of the reasons why no one at Westminster have reacted to this thus far is because they are afraid to offend the religious groups. The church fears a victory for him because it might lead to similar options for incapable elderly who have the same wishes as Tony Nicklinson....
