Journal Entry of a Subordinate Member
Dear Journal,
This is the story of my family’s migration to Texas.
I was born in the Mexican border town Ciudad Juarez, located across the river from El Paso. It was a large and fast growing town. As a kid we would play and swim in the Rio Grande River. But with a population of around 1.5 million people jobs were scarce and the pay was low (Wikipedia, 2010). Many people were forced to work for the drug cartels. Soon the violence began to explode and spill into the streets, two of my older cousins and one Uncle were gunned down in the street when a drug deal went bad. Fearing for our safety Mom and Dad vowed they would get us to a safer place.
My Aunt Marie and Uncle Julio where the first to migrate into the Texas Panhandle. They chose to settle down in a small town called Hereford Texas. Hereford is a town with a population of about 14,367 and its main industry is agriculture. Over time many of my cousins and other family members made the migration to the Hereford area too. There were plenty of jobs and the pay was good too. Most of the men in my family went to work in the farmer’s fields. Growing crops requires a lot of manual labor; from moving irrigation pipe to hoeing row crops such as, milo, cotton, and corn.
Mom and Dad had plans to make the journey north to rejoin our family, as soon as we could save up enough money. In order to get to America faster, all of my siblings work and contribute to the savings. I worked for a cobbler. My job was to pick up and deliver shoes that our wealthy clients needed repaired. My older brothers worked with my father in construction. While my sisters helped Mom craft pottery.
Every time we receive a post card or letter from the states we got that much more excited. We would read the letters and dream of the day we could move there. Hereford... [continues]
