It limits a form of childcare that is proven to be effective and beneficial. The reasons and history behind the government’s biased view of these facilities is still unclear. Orphanages offer many disadvantaged children distinct advantages over foster care, some of which are structure, stability, and a sense of permanence. Children’s homes permit siblings to stay together, afford children a chance to develop moral and religious values, encourage a sense of responsibility and work ethic, as well as much needed education and job-related skills. There is great potential for orphanages to meet the needs of the many children who currently languish for years in the modern foster care system. It is time for policymakers to recognize the distinct advantages institutional care can provide.…

As I walk to school, I see another wall with graffiti, trash on the streets, and a woman walking around with no sense about her. While Riverside County has some nice areas, there are also unkempt neighborhoods. I believe in Eggers points in Serve or Fail, about some of the possible positive effects of community service. Although he states many views about students stepping up and helping the community, I agree with three possible positive effects.…

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” This quote by Oliver Wendall Holmes can be applied to numerous situations in our lives. Throughout my whole life, I rarely ever did community service. Though I went to nursing homes and sang carols during Christmas, I really never considered it to be true volunteer work. I was usually too busy to have any spare time to volunteer and when I did have spare time, volunteer work was never the first thing on my mind. Volunteering last Wednesday, however, did stretch my mind. Because this was my first instance of true volunteer work, everything about it was a new experience. I chose to volunteer to work the table at the blood drive at the Recreational Center because I’ve donated blood before and feel that it is very helpful and necessary to the process of saving lives. Working “behind the scenes” of the blood drive was different though. By sitting there and helping out the donors and handing out snacks afterwards, I got to see the donor community in a different way. Not only that, but a lot of times, I found it to be my responsibility to assure donors that the process was quite easy and painless. Many people came in looking unsure about whether or not they would really donate and these were the people I spent the most time talking to. My “old dimensions” were the thoughts that blood drives just easily happened; people showed up, they donated and that was all that was to it. Volunteering at the blood drive helped me better understand that things like this wouldn’t be possible if there weren’t people to volunteer at them and help everything run smoothly. By my mind being stretched by this experience, I’ve learned that even only helping out for a few hours can go a long way. I feel so much differently about volunteer work now; instead of it being a burden that I’ve been “sentenced to”, it is actually an easy way to give back to the community. On the day of the blood drive, I collected…

    Community Service

Community service isn’t about padding one’s resume, it isn’t about doing things so that one might be proud and arrogant about it. But it is the dawning realization of to the greater understanding our humanity, our fragility and a greater appreciation of the great lives that so many of us lead and deem to be “normal” when it pretty much is extraordinary in its own respect relative to many other individuals around the world. I spent my hours, dedicated to Community service, as an intern at the North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital. Although taking part in this internship was initiated in order to further my knowledge and experience in the medical field, I was taught how to make relations with unknown people that were for the most part, ill. This has been one of the greatest experiences because I got the chance to interact with many different types of people including doctors, nurses, hospital staff members, and patients. This was a double gift for me because my interests in medicine have been greatly expanded and I was given the honor of being able to help those that were in need, whether it was reading a short book to them, or even closing the curtain in their room upon their request.…
