Identify and describe three reasons there may be a physician shortage rather than a surplus in the United States
I believe that three reasons for the physician shortage is due to work hours, women students or physicians and Medicare and Medicaid. I chose these three but there are several other reasons for the physician shortage such as the baby boomers, malpractice or the rising practice expenses. The work week for a physicians has changed drastically over the years due to the schedule of patients and their families. What use to be a simple 8 or 10 hour day has turned into 13 to 14 hour days while being on call on their off days. With my job I am on call all the time not to mention I work 8 to 12 hour days on a regular basis. After working such long hours and not having to live that causes some to get burned out and just not want to do it anymore.
Women students and Physicians were at 50 percent of the doctors trained in hospital based positions. But as time has moved on so have the women not saying that there are no women physicians but they are no coming out of school like they use too. My old doctor ended up resigning due to her long work hours because she wanted children and once she had her second daughter she left. Being a physician is hard when you have a family and have children you don't get to see them grow up like you want to and as a women you need that. Family and social life are important.
Now we come to a big factor in the medical field in general Medicaid and Medicare. Not only do the physicians have to wait to be reimbursed but they have and are experiencing pay cuts. So many people such as baby boomers or individuals with special needs have Medicaid or Medicare. I know that some physicians do not even accept Medicaid nor Medicare because of all that comes with it. If Congress continues in the place that they are no one will be accepting Medicaid nor will they accept Medicare because it is not worth all the time.
