1. The Nacirema are not “a group living in the territory between the Canadian Cree, the Yaqui and Tarahumare of Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles". They are North Americans living in a much simpler time. Miner mentions the holy-month-men, and refers to health and romantic concerns with the mouth. He writes at length about visits to the holy-mouth-men, arguing that their sadism curiously contrasts with the general masochism of the people. As additional examples of masochism, he refers to men rubbing their faces with sharp scrapers and women baking their heads in small ovens. He outlines glimpses of other aspects of American life. The "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema," by Horace Miner, is a piece that discusses the peculiar rituals within industrialized societies, specifically referring to The United States. 2.
