Introduction i- Rezzen Realty Sdn Bhd has appointed to manage a piece of land with size of 50 acres, into a mixed development project at Sepang. I have been requested to incorporate green concepts design and sustainable features from inception and completion into the whole project. The whole of the project divided into three (3) phases, span over 5 years. The first phase is to a proposal to construct a high rise luxury condominium project on the hilly slope. I have been requested to look into selection of suitable retaining wall system for this project.

In this assignment, I will: 1. Discuss the importance of retaining wall and construction methods 2. Illustrate and briefly elaborate the design concept of retaining wall and preventive measures to mitigate functional failures 3. Evaluate the types of retaining wall available and justify which one is the most suitable for the hilly project

The Importance of Retaining Wall The Retaining wall is a stabilizing structure that used to hold sloping ground in place. However, it is to prevent the erosion and the movement of soil. Beside that a retaining wall is a structure designed and constructed to resist the lateral pressure of soil when there is a desired change in elevation that exceed the angle of repose of the soil. To accommodate and redistribute lateral pressure caused be sloping so that the retaining wall must be firm and substantial in structure.
Allow to collect ground water to escape so it normally will design with seepage hole. To keep the retaining wall stable so it has to releases the additional pressure that created by the accumulated water.

There are several types of materials that can be used to construct a retaining wall such as stone and concrete. These two materials are the most common materials used in constructing a retaining wall. Besides that, light concrete and aggregate materials used to make special retaining walls which are designed purposely for this. Building
