The America Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also known as ASPCA “ the first humane society formed in North America and, today, one of the largest humane societies in the world, was founded by Henry Bergh and incorporated in 1866. The mission of the ASPCA, as stated by Henry Bergh in 1866, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States” said Stephen Zawistowski on a he’s article about ASPCA This has been number one mission of this organization, and it they’re motto till this day. This organization was thought of around the Civil War by Henry Bergh as mention before he was in England for a period of time where he experienced some animal abuse. When he went back to New York City he saw that horses where being put to labor, and other animals too, they were being shipped into the city for the butcher markets, animals used in circuses and various exhibits and displays, and of course the many homeless dogs and cats that roamed the city. This is the little history behind this organization. America always had laws against animal cruelty, yet it wasn’t force like it is now, they were very limited in other words were powerless. After ASPCA was formed the New York State legislature passed a law for animal protection law and gave the authority to ASPCA to make this law be force among the people. “This became the first effective model for the protection of animals.” This law gave the “Bergh’s men” authority to arrest, also the right to question individuals, and even investigate people who were suspicious of abusing animals, in other words anybody breaking the cruelty animal law they would take care of them, just like any other crime. Eventually society realized this organization was helpful for everybody and hospitals, animal shelters were opened for the care of animals.
