Discussion Reflection 3

The discussion the group and I had was about deciding whether or not Darl from the book As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner was Insane. Justin did not think Darl was insane. and I disagreed with his thinking. We believe that Darl did go insane, and his actions prove it. Darl Put his mother’s dead body into their barn and burned it down with the farm animals inside the barn.
Justin stated, “Darl is not crazy because he just wanted his mother at peace.” believed, it just happened that the farm animals were in the barn at the same time he was cremating his mother. I somewhat agree with what he’s saying. Darl did want his mother at rest. In my eyes that does not make you insane even though he was cremating her. The fact that he burned her with the animals in the barn made him insane. No human in their right mind would want to hurt animals, if they did then there has to be something wrong with the person. Darl had trauma from his mother’s death which makes it more of a reason for him to have gone insane. Maya stated “Darl was crazy because of what he did to his mother.” In my opinion it is somewhat unbelievable that someone would burn their mother’s dead body, but he thought that she had suffered enough. Darl had good intentions, but he couldn’t think straight. That’s also why he burned the animals with his mother. The fact that he burned his mother contributes to our decision of him being crazy but is only a little portion. Mellissa stated “there is even a quote in the book that says Darl went insane.” The quote in the book is; “Vardaman sits alone in the town square, thinking about how Darl went crazy, and stares at a lone cow.” There is another quote too, “Darl rants to himself as he is brought to burn animals. At the end of our discussion and I were not able to convince Justin that Darl had gone insane. We can conclude that Darl was insane, because

An example of the theme of ‘inhuman cruelty and on page 65 it says “ Behind me, I heard the same man asking: “For God’s sake, where is God?” And from within me, I heard a voice answer: “Where He is? This is where--hanging here from this gallows…” That night, the soup tasted of corpses.” I included these quotes from the book to show that people were being hanged left and right and none of the prisoners had payed no mind to them every hanging was indifferent to them. Until the young pipel was hanged, this made the prisoners asks questions as to where God was during these times of cruelty, when they needed him the most. It also made them seek answers as to the boy dying slowly from being hung, as a prisoner says “ This is where-hanging here from this gallows. . .” showing that the prisoner believed that God was in front of him suffering.…

William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying is a very complicated book telling an emotional journey from multiple perspectives. Out of all these characters, however, Darl seems to be at the center of all the passages. He has a little more than a third of the passages and becomes kind of the central essence for the work. Darl starts of calm and collected, but eventually the journey wears down on him and he descends into madness. In Darl’s first passages his language is mapped out and used very well. By the end of the book his dialect becomes very different and he seems very distant from the things happening around him. Faulkner uses a great amount of skill and word choice to display this and shows a great amount of character development. Overall Darl’s descent into madness seemed to be the main focus of the book.…

In the novel As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner each chapter is written through a different character's perspective. The book follows the Bundren's family on their journey to fulfill Addie's dying wish. There were many motifs and themes throughout the book but one of the most important ones was the use of symbolism. Cash's tools and Anse's farm equipment symbolizing their stability becomes threatened from the carelessness of the Bundren's journey. The coffin stood the burden of dysfunction the Addie's death put on the family. There were also a couple instances where Faulkner used animals to symbolize emotions and as a comparison to a couple of the characters.…

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” (Mark Twain) Both As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner and “Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe can be considered gothic literature. Gothic literature is work that strives to get a reaction out of the audience such as fear, anxiety, and suspense. It is the darker side of literature. In As I Lay Dying and “Fall of the House of Usher”, the gothic conventions used are coffins, death, and torture.…

A feeling at the base of his stomach was urging him to come here, by the will of Gaia herself. If the mother of earth had instructed him so, it must have been seriously grave indeed.
