Wasting away
The article, “Hiding in Plain Sight” by Heather Rogers is about the amount of waste that occurs in our country. Rogers goes into detail about the process it takes for the waste people through away on a daily basis. She explains where it gets shipped off and the different companies that dispose of the waste. Rogers also explains how they people who work at the landfills have to go through a lot of trouble to make sure that people cannot see the waste from the outside nor smell it. It takes the people that work there a lot of trouble to go through each step. Rogers also mentions the low cost of land dumping which is one of the primary reasons why the U.S. uses it. At the end of the article, Rogers poses a question that makes the reader come to realize what her point was all along.

The claim that Rogers tries to make is that people should not have so much trash and that people are wasteful. Through looking several things, Rogers does not make her opposition clear nor explains about the opposing side as well as she could have. Rogers points out the way our waste travels and to what companies. Then, she explains how they dispose of the waste. This is helpful information if Rogers was opposing the landfill companies instead of opposing the people who waste. The example of her not being clear on her audience is when she presents the last line of her argument with a question that reads, “What if we didn’t have so much trash to get rid of?” This is not a bad question; in fact it actually helps the reader understand whom Rogers is really talking to throughout the article. If this question were early on in the argument then maybe everything would have made a little more sense from the beginning. Rogers definitely has a clear point about the amount of waste people dispose and the treacherous process it takes to get rid of it and hide it from the common person.
