Art of Carpet Weaving in Turkish Culture

The Turkish culture is very well known for its carpets.Turkish carpets come in distinct styles, from different regions of Turkey. Important differentiators between the types include the materials, construction and the patterns.All carpets whether woven or knotted contain brilliant colors and beatiful patterns.These carpets began as a protection for Turks from the extreme temperature changes that they experience. Turkish carpets can be also used as wall hangings, floor coverings, and even as window drapes. These carpets have become one of the most popular household items in the world.

When looking at the history of Turkish carpets, we can see that there are environmental, sociological, economic, and religious reasons for the widespread art of carpet weaving among the Turkish people from Central Asia to Turkey.We take our shoes off upon entering a house. Thus, the dust and dirt of the outdoors are not tracked inside.This situation is also influential for developing of Turkish carpet weaving.The another important places which carpets are used are mosques.There are no chairs or benches in a mosque, only carpets. A Turkish mosque is often covered from wall to wall with several layers of carpets. Moreover, In the traditional households, women and girls take up carpet and kilim weaving as a hobby as well as having a purpose for earning money.Even in the present day, hand made carpets are still considered far superior to industrial carpeting in spite of technological advances which promoted factory-made carpets.

There are four types of carpets produced in Turkey. These carpets are classified according to the materials used. The categories include: Silk on silk, Wool on cotton, Wool on wool, viscose on cotton.Moreover, there are two types of dyes which are used to dye wool for weaving: vegetable dyes and chemical dyes.
