Art in the 21st Century

Dissertation Research Summary Anthony Daniels

I have decided that my dissertation should be about the ways that the sciences and
technology has helped artists to break into new areas. Breaking new boundaries has always been
what artists search for. Any new technology will guarantee this change of direction but it is how the
technology is used which is the more important and rewarding aspects to the art work. We may
think of technology   as simply   computers and shiny metal objects that perform a function to make
are life’s easier but technology   is all things made by humans. That includes things we take for
granted but without them there may not even be something called art to begin with. That is paints,
pencils, papers and more than I could possibly list here. The relationship between art and technology
is a interesting one. Art feeds new technologies and vice versa. I will of course be looking at more
modern inventions that have influenced the art world mainly computers programs and robotics   but
I will   talk about prehistoric   man the his relationship to art and how it helped push forward
technology and society.

You can’t mention modern science without talking about the ethics of using new techniques and
technologies. I will be talking about how artists have to have a moral compass when dealing with
things such as bioart. Bioart is artwork made, in part or completely, of living material namely
bacteria and viruses .The problem with ethic comes with dealing with things like this. Perfectly
harmless bacteria (that live on healthy normal adult humans) are put on Petri dishes. They will grow
to the point   where they become very dangerous and could cause someone to get a disease. You
have to be responsible and document everything that you do especially if you are putting work into
a gallery. This is just one example.
