There are many definitions for the word art. One definition of art is the quality, production, expression, or realm according to aesthetic principles, principles of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance (dictionary.com n.d.). Another definition of the word is the conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium (The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 2000.).
The 8 types of art are paintings, sculptures, architecture, photography, printmaking, conceptual art, installation art and performance art. All of these different kinds of art represent something in their own way. Given the assignment, I will be able to give examples of these forms of art and an explanation of why it is considered to be “art”.
The first type of art that I chose was sculpture. The Thinker Statue by Auguste Rodin is a piece that was made to be something it was never designed to be. The thinker statue was designed to be part of The Divine Comedy of Dante. It was supposed to represent Dante and initially was called the Poet. Being that Rodin thought of this piece in a broader aspect, it came to be the thinker statue due to the nature of his stance. This is considered to be art because the definition clearly states that art can be a conscious production or arrangement of form. This sculpture is more than just that it’s a masterpiece that just says so much to the people.
Printmaking is simply just covering a shape that is made from either a plate or block with wet ink (color) and pressing it on a flat surface. The 20th Century Mexican Masters is a work of art that was created by Rufino Tamayo. This painting represents the meaning of art because to me, this piece is considered to be more than ordinary.
