Part I

One piece of architecture that caught my eye was lies in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama. I chose the Vulcan Statue. The Vulcan Statue is the largest cast iron sculpture in the world to be created. It was designed by Italian artist Guiseppe Moretti in 1904. The statue is 55 foot tall and rests on a 123 foot pedestal.   The iron that was used to construct the statue comes from ore mine d at Red Mountain. There are different “…styles and methods-or media of imitation” (Altshuler, 82).   I think that the style being portrayed in this piece of artwork is neo-classical. Neo classical means new classical architecture. The statue represents a “…more lifelike human form” (Altshuler, 90).   Renaissance artists believe in having their own sense of individual expressions. “Renaissance artists combined classical discipline with something new: the demand for freedom of individual expression” (Altshuler, 90).   Perspective was one form that you can see depicted in the statue with the naked eye. In the Vulcan Statue you can see the “…varying the size of figures and objects to approximate how we see” (Altshuler, 90).   Italian artist was the first to experiment with the ability to manipulate the eye on how their medium is actually being portrayed.   According the writings of the text, “They recognized that if art were to attain true likeness, it would have to be three-dimensional.” (Altshuler, 90). The Vulcan is used to portray Alabama’s iron industry.

When I first saw this piece of work it made me feel good to see that important message at a time when I... [continues]
