The world we live in has changed a lot in the last thirty years. Our children used to take lunch boxes to school, play hide and seek and eat homemade cooked meals on a regular basis. Nowadays they eat lunch at the school cafeteria or they pick up a soda and a bag of chips from one of the many vending machines located on school properties. They also enjoy playing video games in front of the TV and since their parents are busy, they replace dinners with pizzas and frozen dinners heated in the microwave. “Junk” food has slowly become a part of our lives the way we know it. We see it everywhere: in our schools, on TV commercials and in our homes. “Junk” food it is affecting children physically and mentally. Even if we try to keep our children away from it when they are home, they still have the possibility to choose it in schools. Schools should get in a partnership with the parents and help them keep the children healthy and happy by banning the “junk” food that has a great impact on children’s health and behavior. Some people might say that children should have the free will but we, as parents, have the responsibility to lead them in life and to teach them to choose the best way not the easy way out. Junk” food is flavorful and very diverse thus enabling us to have many junk food choices. But poor eating habits have consequences on a persons’ health. These bad eating habits are developed early in childhood and it takes a lot of self-discipline to alter them later on. “Mens sana in corpore sano”, and “we are what we eat” are well-known sayings that reflect the active concern that humanity has towards leading a healthier lifestyle and making better food choices. To support this concern many US states have adopted or are working on adopting laws that would restrict or even ban junk food in schools.
