Argument Analysis Essay
The artifact I chose was a short film about bullying called “Sticks and Stones.” In the beginning of the video a mom finds an audio recording of her daughter. While she is listening to the recording it shows the daughter sitting, standing, walking, etc. in various locations. In the recording the girl is talking about how she was bullied and the effects it had on her. She goes on to say that she had no friends and no one to go to for help. At the end of the recording the girl tells her mother goodbye and it shows the girl looking at a hangman’s knot. During the last fifteen seconds of the video a couple of statistics are given and then the names of everyone involved in the video are shown. I believe that this video is effective because it is very emotional. The rhetor of this video is a guy named Conor Chalk. He made this short film for a college project to raise awareness about bullying. Conor is not a well-known director so there is not a lot of information about him. The audience of this video was primarily the college professor and students he made the video for. However, he posted this video to YouTube so everyone who has seen the video is also part of the audience. There are some constraints concerning the video. For example, the audience expected something emotional and heartfelt because the video deals with the topic of bullying. If the video had been making fun of people who were being bullied then he would have gone outside of his constraints. The message of this video is a girl telling her mother, through an audio recorder, that she doesn’t want to live anymore because she is being bullied by the people around her.
