An Argument for Abortion: The Effects of Overturning Roe V. Wade

Abortion is a word that has the ability to fill a room with a cloud of tension whenever it is brought up in discussion. Just talking abortion somehow makes people uncomfortable.   This happens for several reasons, such as people usually have a definitive feeling about their stance on the subject. Another reason for the tension would be that people are afraid to offend others with their personal views. The last reason would be the individuals who don’t want to seem ignorant by not being sure where they stand on the issue. Often times when faced with the argument of whether or not to outlaw abortion, debaters fail to recognize what would actually happen if abortion was in fact aborted itself.   Most argue for a religious reason, or for the right of a "person" rather than recognizing the social turmoil our society would face if abortion was outlawed.   I shall argue that abortion should remain legal with some restrictions because if outlawed the fate of human kind would ultimately suffer.

In the United States, abortions may be legally performed for reasons that fall into four general categories. The first category includes the preservation of the mother’s physical or mental health, or more importantly her life. A pregnancy that is a result from the act of rape or incest is the second. The third category would be to prevent the birth of a child with a serious physical or mental deformity, or genetic abnormality. Lastly, if female is extremely young, or one of very low socio-economic status (Encyclopedia Britannica).

About 49 percent of all pregnancies in the United States each year are unintended pregnancies, with 42 percent of these pregnancies ending in abortion (Vaughn 162).... [continues]
