Day One: September 24, 2012

Do Now: Are you what you eat? How do you know? Prove it!

I think in a way you are what you eat because most things you eat were alive at one point and the nutrition from the food gives you energy to keep living and moving. Also, if you eat unhealthy, your body will become affected and be unhealthy, but if you eat healthy your body will remain healthy. It also all depends on a person’s metabolism because some people are more affected by certain foods than others. It also depends if the food is healthy or unhealthy.

Reflection One- Revised
I believe in a way you are what you eat because a lot of things factor into it. Some food have more matter, which is something that has mass and takes up space, than others because of what they are made of. If those foods happen to be healthy, then your body will be healthy, but if those are bad for you then your body may be unhealthy. For example, if you only eat organic foods you maintain a very healthy diet. But, if you eat McDonald’s for every meal, every day of the week, your body is unhealthy and you can experience things like weight gain or even health problems from this.

With the properties of water, things like cohesion, adhesion, density, and polarity all have a certain affect. If you drink a lot of water, due to cohesion, after the molecules attract to each other, you may become bloated. Adhesion may allow water to attract to the food in your body, which could cause weight gain. Adhesion may also allow capillary action to take place in your body, which is the upward movement of h20 solutions through thin tubes. Capillary action could travel things through your veins. The polarity in your body is good because it helps dissolve the food in your stomach to make room for new food. Polarity, the uneven distribution of electrons, is able to dissolve the particles in food because using water it is able to break down polar solutes like sugar and salt. Chemical reactions break down the food, and the polarity in the water is good for chemical reactions. With density, the heavier the food is, the more full you may become. Water is extremely dense, that’s why you’re full or bloated after having a lot of water.

The foods you eat could be considered an acid or base on the pH scale. An acid has a pH less than 7 and an acid in your body with a low pH may cause your stomach to feel upset if you have too much of the acid. For example, oranges, milk or vinegar. Having high amounts of bases in your body may not be good either since bleach and soap are both bases. Foods that are bases are usually hand grown like asparagus, potatoes, etc. To cope with pH change you have to try to have as much base in you as you do acid. Chemical reactions in your body can allow the matter in the food to be broken down through certain speeds because the chemical reaction in your body is metabolism. This can determine the amount of weight you gain from food. In conclusion, you might not literally become what you eat but there are certain aspects of things in your body that can affect you after eating certain foods.

I still believe in a way you are what you eat and carbohydrates are one way to show that. Carbs include carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in ration of 1:2:1. They come in 2 forms, sugars and starches. We use carbohydrates as our main source of energy. Simple sugars are one monomer, where complex sugars are usually starches. They are usually found in things like crackers, bread, pasta, rice, etc. Carbohydrates come in monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. Monosaccharides are simple sugars with one monomer and are linear or ring shaped. Disaccharides are 2 monosaccharides joined by an enzyme. This happens through dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis reaction. Dehydration synthesis is the release of 1 water molecule to bond a monomer.
