Are Long Distance Relationships doomed?
A long distance relationship is defined as a relationship in which two people are in two different geographical areas for a long period of time. What kind of relationship can exist between two people that are physically apart? Is this really a relationship? There must be a strong commitment and understanding between the two for this to be maintained. Do long distance relationships work?
“Appointment with Love” is a short story written by S. I. Kishor. The main characters maintain a long distance relationship over a period of thirteen months. The amazing thing about this relationship is they have never met each other face to face. If they can lead a long distance relationship without meeting one another, it is feasible to say that in modern times, long distance relationships be successful.
Lieutenant Blandford and Hollis Meynell worked very hard on communication in their relationship. This is vital to having a successful long distance relationship. They corresponded to one another via letters while he was on deployment for a little over a year. The letters help their relationship grow because; they confide deep emotional thoughts to one another. One of his greatest fears is dying while in combat. She, in turn, helps lift his spirit by writing to him even when she receives no letters herself.
In the year 2010, there are many more different opportunities to communicate with one another. Email, instant messaging via the internet, webcams, and Skype are just to name a few. Blandford and Meynell did not have this opportunity. The only way they built their relationship was through letters they wrote to one another. During pre-internet times, letters were written specifically to keep in touch with people who were on a different coast or in another country.
