Are indian mascots racist
Are Native American Mascots Racist Symbols

Many Sports teams today have mascots and team names that are offensive to Native Americans. Teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Blackhawks, and the North Dakota Fighting Sioux just to name a few.
A controversy has existed for decades about sports mascots with Native American images and names. Some argue that the images and names projected by Indian mascots demean the traditions of their people, and improperly represent history.

Those who support Indian sports mascots argue that these mascots honor Native American traditions, culture, and history. Mascot names such as “Indians”, “Chiefs”, “Savages”, and “Red Men” are chosen to represent aspects of courage and pride. This coincides with why teams would consider these choices as mascots.

Supporters of the ban say that even if the schools that use them harbor no ill intent, the images themselves are stereotypes. Opponents of the ban suggest that these names celebrate, rather than shine a negative light on the Native American culture. What about other sports nicknames that make reference to a particular group of people, such as the Minnesota Vikings or the Fighting Irish? How about religion? For example the Quakers, Anaheim Angles, or the New Orleans Saints for instance. We could argue that occupation should also be a legitimate reason to band mascots such as the Seattle Mariners, Pittsburg Steelers, Boilermakers and Engineers.

One could argue that if we were to be 100% politically correct that we would have to band almost all mascots, as we would be offending all of the groups mentioned above. In today’s society, it seems anything can be considered offensive to someone or some group. Everything has to be politically correct or people get upset. Sports teams are meant to bring enjoyment to people’s lives. The team mascot is supposed to represent team unity and get fans fired up to

“Sports Logos an Insult to Aboriginals” is an essay explaining how professional sports teams use Indian symbols. Aboriginals find it very offensive when sports teams adopt their cultural icons. The writer uses examples such as Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins and Washington Redskins to portray an image of how these icons have been use. Augustine states that the use of these religious symbols or spiritual leaders as sports logos is offensive. Also, this leads to children to be victims of racism. It can be argued that people feel Aboriginal people should be honoured that these imagery of Indians is being used. Augustine argues back that no honour lies in ridicule and mockery. People are realizing this racism when the Washington Redskins cancelled seven trademarks and there logo because of several complaints from tribes. They are hoping that one day aboriginals will get the respect they deserve.…

The widened use of Native American mascot should not be appreciated, because it is not only result the disagreement and disconnection between two nations, but also this can be seen as the racist of the American toward the Natives. These mascots and cultural figures are part of the Native American culture. To go and generalize these people into a sports team that have nothing to do with who they are, is being very prejudice, misleading, and in many ways wrong. This controversy should not even be something to think about. These people deserve the right to be heard and understood that their names, tribal figures, and beliefs are theirs. Mascots used to define them bring nothing but racism, shame, stereotyping, and generalization.…

    Mascot Controversy essay

“The Washington State Board of Education has passed a resolution urging school districts to stop using Native American mascots, the Olympian reported.” (ABC news). We can recall that these mascots were deemed “full of pride, integrity, courage” and so much more by the fans, promoters, and teams. People say the mascots are “okay”. But has that ever made anything in the world “okay”? In that sense, war, and everything that happens with it is “okay” too. Is it okay to take images from cultures we essentially know NOTHING about and use them for our own entertainment? To take the identity of someone else and commercialize it to the world? The term Redskins means nothing like we use it today. It is not just the name of a sports team. Native American images should not be used as mascots due to the misleading concepts that people take away from the terms and images. We’ve taken their culture, pride, tradition filled ways and turned it into nothing more than a silly image for a sport.…

The exploitation of racially and culturally offensive nicknames, mascots, and images in sports has been a topic of debate in the US and Canada over the last half-century. The controversy occurs at all levels ranging from elementary schools to professional teams. This has resulted in many teams changing either their team name, team image, or team mascot associated with their sports teams. The most well known professional teams that are not supported by their respective tribes are the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins, and the Chicago Blackhawks. The Cleveland Indians “Chief Wahoo” might have been the most insulting and offensive logo, which depicts an extremely stereotypical image of an American Indian with a red face, big smile, and a feather sticking out of his hair. Although this image has long since been removed and replaced with a harmless capital letter “C”, the irreversible damage to the reputation and culture of the Native American people has been done. The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) feels that the mascots of these teams portray negative stereotypes of Native American people and demean their native traditions and rituals.…

    Mascots to Be Banned

Aside from professional sports teams having offensive names, high school and college teams also have offensive names. In Greenly, Colorado at the University of Northern Colorado, their mascot is the Fightin' Reds. Of course, this name sounds very racists, depicting Native Americans in a very harsh manner. Students on the basketball team renamed their team, The Fightin' Whites. They were trying to depict the 1950's style of the average American male. Their slogan for their team is "Every thang's going to be all white." By making this new mascot and new slogan, the basketball team was trying to get their city council to talk about the insensitive team mascots that their school, along with thousands of other schools have. In Eaton, Colorado the people who live there are amazed by all the madness that is going on about the school's mascot. They are perfectly happy with the mascot, and to them it seems like it would be breaking tradition if someone were to change their mascot. Even though there are many people who hate the school's mascot and vote for it to be changed, there are also some people who love it and do not want to be changed. Some people think it is a honor for a school's mascot to be named after their culture. But the number of people for the mascots do not even compare to the number of people opposed to the mascots. Many people see a problem in our sports teams today. These teams have mascots that offend some people and should be removed according to many. Teams like the Redskins and Chiefs are found racist to Native Americans. Native Americans find them as representing wrong historic symbols according to an article written by the NCRSM board of directors. They are also defiling and dishonoring the Native American race by the clownish figures representing in football teams fans, said in the article “The Indian Wars.” People think that these mascots are racist and should be removed. Some people think that it is as harsh as calling one a nigger. This was stated by Billy Mills, the former runner who won a gold medal in the 10,00 meters at the 1964 Olympics. Obviously there are others that think this is not as much of a problem.…

The material I have selected to analyze is “Bonding Over a Mascot” on page 632. This essay remonstrates that the Florida State University’s mascot, the Seminole, is a derogatory representation of a certain Native Indian tribe called the Seminoles. The school mascot represents the era when the Seminoles and United States were at war. For some this mascot connects the past history of Seminole culture and Florida State’s sports, but for others it creates a disputation of Native American stereotypes.…
