Building 1







Location: 21 mahmoud bassiouny st. – at corner of the
street, with its corner pointing at the Talaat harb square.
Built: 1920s
Influence: Art deco
Area of each floor: 1539
No. of floors: 6

Façade: The building's style is Neobaroque .The style of the building is influenced by the Art deco. The façade of
the building is symmetrical. The building is
symmetrical and it has two almost identical
facades, each is facing a different street, one
facing Mahmoud Bassiouny St. and the
other facing Kasr Al Nile St.

Decoration: Windows: the windows in the first floor has the same pattern (arched windows) and surrounded by the stone pattern, the 2nd floor's window openings are framed with a
rectangular frames that are
locked with a keystone
consisting of three elements,
the third floor window
openings are topped with a

U-shaped element and the 4th floor window openings are frame from the top only with a U-shaped element that is included in the horizontal decoration strip above the openings. The window openings in each floor has different styles of key stones locking the openings, the backward elevation of the building is totally plain.

Materials: The building is made from stones, and claded with white stones pattern and red bricks, and some parts are plastered with a white material (Plaster or white Concrete).

Entrance: The building has one entrance from the façade facing Mahmoud Bassiouny St.

Relation with neighboring building:
The building beside groppi's building from the façade facing Mahmoud Bassiouny St. is one floor high at the same level of the ground level of groppi's building and it is cladded with white material and stone patterns that makes it related to

groppi's building.

The building beside groppi's building from the façade facing Kasr Al Nile St. is 2 floors high(ground floor and 1st floor) the ground floor building is different from the 1st floor building in material and decoration, the ground floor building is

cladded with white material and stone patterns that makes it related to groppi's building but the 1st floor building is

different in material(old plaster) and it has no decoration totally plain .

Use and function: The building is mixed use, Entertainment, commercial (Groppi) and residential. Each floor has three apartments.

Story: We entered Groppi and met Groppi's general manager (Mohamed el Attar) he told us the building was built at 1924", but he didn't know much about the building, we searched for the building keeper (Ibrahim Deif) who knew more but refused to talk much, he told us the right date in which it was built at 1920.

Façade: The building's style is Neo- Islamic . The Façade is cladded with stones, and the window is done in wood. This might be influenced by the ottoman; since these two materials were used a lot in there buildings and designs as major elements.

Decoration: The building is decorated with huge Arabic typography signs, mashrabiyas with Islamic shapes and patterns , different types of arched windows ;(pointed arch, straight arch, segment arch and normal arches) and some shading elements with Islamic shapes and patterns .The decorations 5

shown on the handrail of the cantilever are taken from the ottoman’s style having Islamic shapes and patterns .

Materials: The building is made from stones and bricks and claded with white stones pattern and some elements with wood.
