Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor and

Astronomer.   Not many people knew the details of his life, but he is considered to be one

of the leading scientists in “classical antiquity”. Archimedes has had many advances in

his life among them physics, hydrostatics and the explanation of the principle of the

lever. He’s credited with designing innovative machines, including siege engine also the

screw pump that is named after him. Archimedes gave a remarkably accurate

approximation of Pi.

Archimedes was also able to use “infinitesimals in a way that is similar to modern

Integral calculus”. He also gave the square root to the outside of a circle as being 3. In the

Quadrate of the Parabola, Archimedes proved that the area enclosed by a parabola and

a straight line is 4/3 multiplied by the area of a triangle with equal base and height. He

expressed the solution to the problem as a geometric series that is equal to infinity with

the ratio as ¼. He got the approximate value of a circle by drawing a large polygon

outside a circle and a smaller polygon inside of a circle as the sides of the polygon

increase it becomes a more accurate circle.

Archimedes always strived to be better on one of his excursion he went out to

calculate the number of grains of sand that the universe could contain. This was one of

his failed attempts, he marked inconclusive noting that it would be impossible for anyone

to calculate this number. He wrote that the universe could hold infinity, but as a person

who didn’t take inconclusive as an answer, Archimedes devised a system of counting

based on the myriad. He concluded that the number of grains of sand required to fill the

universe would be eight times ten to the sixty-third power.

Archimedes was considers to be one of the greatest minds in history, with his

many accomplishments and inventions in mathematics and the many other... [continues]
