Applying Counseling Phases to Employees/Clients Working in Banking/Financial Organizations
Introduction
In the Compact Oxford English Dictionary Online the definition of counseling is as follows: “1 gives advice to. 2 give professional help and advice to (someone) to resolve personal or psychological problems. 3 recommend (a course of action).” Also, according to Jane Goodman, Ph.D and Judith Hoppin, M.A ( 2007) , in today’s society, employees that work with an organization “may work for one organization over time and increase their employability by learning new skills that fits their employer’s new needs”. Modern Career Counselors need to be equipped to address all concerns that a client may bring to counseling. There have been models of career counseling developed to assist a counselor through the counseling process. (Zunker, 2006) These models include phases which the counselor should follow in an attempt to aid a client through the issues they approach a counselor with, phases included are: 1)Assessment, 2)Problem Identification & and Formulation, 3)Goal Setting, 4) Development of Means, 5) Implementation, 6) Evaluation, 7) Review, and 8) Exiting. This paper will begin with definitions of the phases of Assessment, Problem Identification, through my own interpretation of the course content and additional readings. The paper will then move to explain my beliefs on why people come to career counseling and what should be accomplished in the career counseling phases of; Assessment and Problem Identification and Formulation. Then will move to describe theories of career counseling and how they can be applied to the counseling phases of; Assessment and Problem Identification and Goal Setting. This paper will conclude, by combining the meaning of each phase, my beliefs and the theories that support my beliefs, to explain how a counselor might conduct the counseling phases of Assessment and, Problem Identification and Goal setting to employees who...
