Learning is an important process in our whole life. Starting from kindergarten, children need to acquire more new knowledge and skills from different domains. These knowledge is important for children to be adapted to the environment which change every. An appropriate teaching plan can really facilitate children to learn more effectively. As being a professional teacher, it is not enough to only know what the children have learnt but ignoring the process of learning. So in this essay, an activity is designed for students and there are two learning theories that are used to apply into the activity. Those theories are the social learning theory and the operant conditioning. Examples would be used from the activity to explain how the theories fit into the design and process of facilitating children’s learning. In order to make clear application of the theories, the activity is need to be introduced in detail. The designed activity is focus on the music domain. This activity is designed for K2 students who are speaking Cantonese as their mother language. The activity is mainly aims to teach children to learn about the concept of rhythm and beat through games and practical practice. There are several learning objects for children to achieve by the activity. Firstly, students can basically differentiate different rhythm according to their speed. Secondly, students can clap out different set of diverse rhythm of one beat and half beat according to the prompted fruit pictures. Last but not least, students can apply the knowledge to clap out the rhythm of a song which make up by one beat and half beat, and then learn to sing the song. At the beginning of the activity, teacher will clap out different set of steady beat and ask student to listen carefully. Also, teacher is going to discuss with the students whether the rhythm is fast or slow. Teacher changed to use the piano or other music instrument to play different set of steady beat afterwards. At the same time, to make the activity more interesting, teacher can use a story to link up the beat and demonstrate the method of acting out the story. Then ask student to follow the beat and act out the story. Teacher present the fruit pictures to student. There are two types of fruit picture, one is an orange and the other one is an apple. Teacher need to ensure that student can recognize the fruits and pronounce its name in Cantonese. Teacher explains different pictures represent a particular beat. Then need to demonstrate the beat by clapping it out and pronounce the name of the fruit at the same time with the presented picture. Each time students got the beat right, teacher will praise them immediately. Teacher can practice the beat with students with different part of body to make it more fun. After several times of practice, teacher can use the pictures to create different rhythm combination. Students are divided into four groups and take turn to perform in class. The group can choose the part of their body to do the rhythm performance. Every time the group got the rhythm right, teacher will praise them with stickers and ask the audience show appreciation with their thumb up. Teacher can tell students they will be chosen as little helper if they perform well in clapping those rhythm. Then, teacher can ask little helpers out and let them create different rhythm with the fruit pictures for others to clap. Afterwards, teacher can start to introduce the song. Teacher divided the song into parts and clap out the rhythm of each part. Students need to listen carefully and match the correct fruit pictures with the rhythm. Practice the rhythm with children and then teacher can add the lyrics and music into the rhythm. Teacher can sing the song with clapping out the rhythm for a few times and encourage students to sing together.
