Applications of Robots and the Future
Abstract
This Research Paper will discuss robotics. It will focus on the application of robotics within different fields. Also, it will discuss how robots will impact different sectors of society. It will give a prognosis of what can be expected in the future. It assumes that the reader is not fully knowledgeable on robotics and related topics. It is important to realize that robots have been part of our society for several decades. A robot by definition is a machine that can do certain task according to its program. A robot is limited because of its design and how it’s programmed. The intelligence of the robot depends of the program. The more advance the intelligence of the program or Artificial Intelligence (AI) then, the more capable the robot is. The field of robotics is grouped accordingly to its application. Robots have been applied to perform hard and strenuous task. Thus, robots can outperform humans. This is why robots have replaced human performance in places like the assembly line. The robots that have been applied in the assembly line are part of the industrial robotics field. Industrial robots can perform tasks that would take a human or a group of human workers hours if not days to perform. Assembly lines in car-production plants have various sections where robots take charge. For example, robots can weld, paint and assemble parts of a car. Car manufacturers have an estimated ten to one, robot to human worker ratio (accordingly) and are also expected to grow by almost twenty-five percent (Thrun 2004). Furthermore, with the advancement of AI, robots have been applied to perform more autonomously. An autonomous robot has the ability to react to changes and act accordingly to how it is programmed. In addiction, robotics has two other fields; professional service robotics and personal service robots field (Thrun 2004). To most a robot is a robot that is human like. This is due to the media’s portrayals of robots with human like qualities and capabilities. Although, this is not current status of most functional personal robots, it is definitely the focus of the future personal robots. Currently personal service robots are used within the domestic sector. These robots can perform household chores like vacuuming. Unlike industrial robots, personal robots required to be more technologically advanced. Including but not limited to: “human-robot interaction (speech, gesture, person, face recognition person tracking, among others), navigation and mapping, reasoning, planning, behavior control, object recognition, object manipulation or tracking of objects” (Wisspeintner et al 2009). Personal service robots require such technologies and capabilities because personal robots work in a human rich environment that has many changes occurring at anytime. Thus, the robot must recognize the changes and learned. These robots will be sharing the same space that the humans will use and thus a form of interaction will occur. How humans and robots interact will depend largely on the robots AI. Currently there are many companies that have focusing on making robots that would be able to socialize at a human level. For example, robots like Kismet, Cog and Infanoid are able mimic social capabilities. This type focus on robotics is part of the attempt of creating robots with human life-like qualities. Although, it’s far from its goal, creating human like robot has been a vision for many years. On the other hand, Professional service robots are not a vision of the future but of the present. Professional robots are robots that are applied within a specialized field. For example, robots applied in the medicine and military field.
