Applications of Electromagnetic Induction including Eddy Currents:
A cardboard is a moving part of the given hand made microphone. When a sound wave strikes the diaphragm (cardboard in the following experiment) of the microphone, the diaphragm vibrates back and forth, and the attached coil moves along with it. Additionally, magnet is attached with coils on a cardboard. When the coil alternately approaches and move back from the magnet, the flux through the coil changes. As a result of this, an ac emf is induced in the coil. Next, this electrical signal is sent to an amplifier and to the speakers respectively. In a moving-magnet microphone, the magnet is attached to the diaphragm and moves relative to a stationary coil.
The handmade microphone did not work as desire; however, I was able to visualize and understand physic behind the microphone, which was fascinating. In addition to the microphone, induction cooker and transformers are two other applications of electromagnetic induction that we use in everyday life.
I assumed that slung peace would come out first because it is a nonmagnetic material, which will not create any magnetic induction, and magnetic forced will not act; it neither oppose nor support slung motion through the metal tube. However, a piece of the magnet crates magnetic force with the metal tube. Falling of the magnetic piece creates magnetic force, which oppose the magnetic piece’s motion, causing it fall slowly through the metal tubes.
In the following experiment, a single magnet (60g) took 5.21 seconds to come out of the gold tube; however, it only took 8.09 seconds for the silver tube. Similarly, slung (35g) took only 1.12 seconds to come out of the gold tube where as it took 0.84 seconds to come out from the silver tube. For the double magnet (85g) piece, it took 5 seconds and it changes 0.75 N weight for the gold tube. Next, double magnet took 7.78 seconds and weight was change by 1 N.
