THE IMPACT OF ECOTOURISM DEVELOPMENT CONCERNING ON THE MARINE SANCTUARY TOWARDS THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF THE PEOPLE LIVING IN APO ISLAND FOR THE PERIOD 2000 – 2010.
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
In a remote fishing village in the Philippine archipelago, coastal fishers responded to falling fish stocks by working harder to catch them. The combination of dynamite, longer workdays, and more advanced gear caused stocks to fall faster. On the edge of crisis, this small community decided to create a no-take marine sanctuary on 10% of its coral-reef fishing grounds. In these terms the problem occurred not only the fishermen but also the people in the area because they worry about the source of income of most of the residence. The marine activity problems has been observed by the people because they are directly affected and in through the negative impact that affects the people remedial measures should be implemented to stop and avoid larger marine problems.
One of the goals of Department of Tourism is to protect the marine life sanctuary to increase the number of marine life and conserve the different species. It s necessary to conduct this kind of study to find out the feedbacks of the people in Apo Island in terms of the condition of ecotourism development specifically the marine sanctuary. A study was conducted on how a marine reserve could reverse this situation which proved to be the answer to Apo Island’s dilemma. In the year 1980, conservation guidelines were implemented by the island barangay council and the Dauin Municipal Council which claims political jurisdiction over the island. Such guidelines aimed to defend illegal and destructive fishing practices done by outsiders.
We conduct this kind of research study for us to understand the side of the residence in Apo Island about their quality of life whether they accept the ecotourism development as a negative or positive impact. We are also interested in determining the status of marine sanctuary in Apo Island and to be able to know the quality of life of the people towards ecotourism development.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study is conducted to determine the impact of ecotourism development concerning on the marine sanctuary towards the quality of life of the people living in Apo Island for the year 2000-2010.
Specifically, this study was conducted to answer the following questions:
a. What are the benefits of the development of ecotourism development of ecotourism towards the lifestyle of the people living in Apo Island?
b. What do the people gain in the development of ecotourism in terms of marine sanctuary protection in their place?
c. Does the marine sanctuary have a big help in the quality of life of the people in Apo Island?
d. How adequate are the government laws and policies being implemented to preserve and protect the marine sanctuary y?
e. Do the tourist activities can be a result into negative ecological consequences?
f. What are the incentives of the people in Apo Island experiencing the ecotourism development specifically in their marine sanctuary?
g. What problems are being encountered by the people in Apo Island in the Development of ecotourism which is focusing on the marine sanctuary?
IMPORTANCE OR SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The Apo Island Marine Sanctuary is a protected reef where fishing is strictly prohibited. However, traditional methods of fishing are allowed beyond the sanctuary’s area and never the harmful and non-ecological methods like muro-ami (dynamite fishing) and other related methods. Traditional methods would include hook and line, bamboo traps, gill nets, spear fishing without scuba, and other kinds of netting. Our country is a developing type of country and one factor being implemented and...
