Can Anyone Determine What Education Really Is?

Education can be traced back for so many years. It’s been developed into so many things we can’t keep track. But the question right now is “What is education, really?” The Wikipedia states, “In its technical sense education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another”. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education]. In other words, education is the process of gaining and learning new things. Does it really have to be that detailed and long to explain one simple word? When did education actually begun or developed? Some of you may say “what do you mean by that?” Well, every day, every hour, every minute and every second we are learning. It can be from knowing how to open your eyes for the first time. It could be the knowledge of how to cook for the first time. Or even down to knowing how to change the television channel. Education is all around us. But some people are either not taking advantage of it or just don’t have the opportunity to receive it. Statistics showed that over the past 20th century, people are more likely to graduate from high school more than the past generation before. The way the economy is changing; having education is one of the top requirements in order to receive a chance for a job. Most high end jobs will require you to have a college educated level. Its funny how our youth today are graduating more from college, but at the same time our youth is failing or dropping out of high school is increasing. Why are the statics that way? What is interfering with our youth that is causing them to lose the chance of a lifetime? We need to in courage our youth to achieve and make a better life for themselves.

Education can be explained in so many

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,” this is an inspirational quote by Winston Churchill, which can lead as an example to all the students in the United States that have dropped out of high school. According to dosomething.org, the U.S, which had some of the highest graduation rates of any developed country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries. Imagine if every student made it to college. Jobs would be plentiful, homeless folks would become less in numbers, and the acceptance rates for jobs would be much higher. Now, consider this. From ages twenty-five to thirty-two, twenty-two percent with a diploma from high school are living in poverty, in comparison to six percent of college-educated adults, today (“The Rising Cost of Not Going to College”). This is a real problem in today’s nation, but can be prevented. A college degree is very important unless you can hit a golf ball like Tiger Woods or throw a punch like Floyd Mayweather Jr. Most parents make sure their children are clothed, nurtured and spoon fed college applications since the day they are born. Pursuing college after high school seems like the most natural thing for a high school student. Could it be because high school students are bred to fear life without college or an education? Those without a college degree are treated like the “black sheep” of society or invisible to major business organizations. Students are enticed by the many rewards endured after achieving a college degree. However, the cost of the rewards are too great for college students to enjoy until years later.…

One person that really analyzes what is wrong with the youth of today is Mark Edmunson. He thinks, “I want some of them to say they’ve been changed by the class… I don’t teach to amuse, to divert, or even, for that matter to be merely interesting (323).” In his writing he would talk about how kids are there to be entertained and were expecting school to be easy. I believe that may be one wrong idea that our society has about education. Students now take everything for granted and feel entitled to an easy education. I see it everyday I go to class. Students will just sit there and not interact at all. They just sit there and don’t try at all and expect to breeze through that class. Then once they realize they’re doing horrible they try to blame the teacher for not teaching good enough. When really it’s not the teacher’s responsibility at all it is the student’s job to learn. It’s really society I think that has led students to think this. I believe it starts in elementary school which it should be allowed. I think it goes wrong when junior high and high school teachers allow their students to have that mindset. I think they give them that mindset by being too easy on them. That is one of my ideas about education and how society I think has the wrong idea about it.…
