The Renaissance- French for “rebirth”
    - The term Renaissance applies to a cultural event and to a time period, but it is mainly known for it’s art and literature.
    - Humanism- The study of writings and ideals of the classical past. The first humanists were orators and poets. They wrote original literature in both classical and vernacular languages.
    - Christian Humanism- wanted the church to reform. Much more religious the regular humanist.
    - Individualism- Behavior or theory that emphasizes each person as contrasted with   community behavior. Renaissance individualism sought great accomplishments and looked for heroes of history.
    - The Florentine Academy was in a country villa, and supported by the rich Medici family and leader political family. The students here studied the works of Plato.
    - Classicism- The interest in the culture of the ancient Greeks and the Romans.
    - Secularism- Ideas outside the church.
Renaissance Literature
    - Writers became writers by occupation.
    - Wrote about daily life.
    - Beginning of humor and sarcasm.
    - Dante is not considered a Renaissance man, but he was a writer during the time of the Renaissance.
