Ayn Rand vs Environmentalism
Ayn Rand a well-known writer once said, “Man’s unique reward, however, is that while animals survive by adjusting themselves to their background, man survives by adjusting his background to himself”(Rand). Rand grew up in the corrupted communist nation of Russia in the 1900’s. Moving to America to write, she portrayed her views through her books. A particular topic she favored was environmentalism. Environmentalism involves the protection of nature and the health of all living things. Environmentalists dedicate themselves to protecting the environment by eliminating anything that can harm it.  Rand’s writings compared environmentalists to the communists in Russia. She wrote of her views in her book “Anthem.” Environmentalism is the theory that views environment rather than heredity as the important factor in the cultural and intellectual development of an individual or group (Merriam-Webster). In various ways, environmentalism claims that living things other than humans, and the natural environment as a whole, are deserving of consideration in reasoning about the mortality of political, economic, and social policies (Encyclopedia Britannica). According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, environmentalism concerns the air, climate change, emergencies, green living, health and safety, land and cleanup, chemicals, waste, and water. The history of technology effecting the environment is no mystery. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded killing fifty people immediately and releasing toxic chemicals into the air and water. Ultimately, an estimated 4,000 people died. In 2010, an explosion in the Deepwater Horizon oil platform sent millions of gallons of oil into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico devastating fragile land in Louisiana.
